Slipped:A Love Story Birthed In Chiraq

Present Day

February 2012

What the fuck? He’s not supposed to be home yet!

I reached to flick the light on, but there was no need to. The candles propped up on anything and everything around the house had the inside lit up like a Christmas tree. In the middle of the floor, down on one knee, Mega had his arm outstretched with a little gold box open in the middle of his palm. From afar, I could see a white sparkly diamond ring.

“Megaaaaaa!” I whined, as I stepped inside, out of the cold. In a rush, I locked the door behind me so he wouldn’t see his God brother’s truck pulling away. “What’s going on? What’s all this? You home early.” Stepping out my heels, I tossed them over to the side then proceeded to pull off my rain jacket.

“What it look like?”

What it look like? I tossed my rain jacket onto the banister then turned and took the whole scene in. I’m speechless. His whole town house was decorated with goodies just for me. I couldn’t help but to smile. Furs, dresses, heels, drugs, and jewels.

This Man…

“If this is your apology, I accept, O’mega, I accept! Let me just get in a bath real quick and—”

“Hold on!” he stopped me. “This more than an apology, and this ring in my hand is more than a little promise ring.”

“Yeah?” I tried to keep as much distance between us as possible.

“Yup.” He repositioned the big tear drop shaped ring. “NaStah’sia Rayjay Childs, I want you to be Mrs. Tate. Will you marry me?”

“O’mega…”

“I know we just met.”

“Days ago,” I stressed.

“But do you believe in love at first sight?”

“No.” I shook my head.

“Well, can you try to for me?”

“O’mega please—”

“I just want to hear your answer, Stah’si. I’ve loved you since the day I laid eyes on you. On God in heaven, I did.”

“Don’t you think this is too soon?”

“No! When a man wants a woman, it’s never too soon.”

“How can you be so sure that it’s me you want, when after I fought your baby mama it was her side you were standing by?”

His eyes diverted from the light. He grabbed my wrist to keep himself from falling over off his knee. “That was a mistake, I’ll never do it again.”

“You’ve been drinking?”

He put up three fingers.

“Get Up.” I pulled at him beneath his arms like he was a baby.

“Yes or no?” He didn’t budge, and only pushed the ring closer into my face.

I tossed my hair out my eyes. “Not now. Hopefully, in time. We’ll talk after I take a shower.”

“We’re getting married or you’re getting out, Stah’si. I’m not giving another woman the world and coming out with nothing. I ain’t doing it.”

I became stiff as stone.

“Yes or no? I’m grown, Nastah’sia, I ain’t finna play with you, or no other female for that matter. Listen, I’m telling you, Ion do this shit that I’ve done with you. I’ve cleaned out a part of my dresser for you. Cleared a whole side of my closet. I believe in you.” The conviction in his tone made me warm. “I believe in us. You’re beautiful as fuck, smart… Your past ain’t pretty, but your outlook on life, your strength, the way you cook a fucking steak…”

I laughed.

“Let’s just get this over with.”

I stared at the ring and thought about his ultimatum.

“What better way to show you’re with me than to really be with me? Under vows, for better or worse.”

“You sure about this?”

“I’m positive, God told me to do this.”

“God, O’mega?”

“Yes. I’m at the age where I have to show my daughter what a man is. This is important to me. You know you wanna say yes.” He rubbed my thigh. “You know you can picture us together forever.”

If I get to come home to shit like this, of course I fucking can.

“Baby.” I stopped his hand.

“What's the matter, huh? You not feeling me no more?” He jammed his finger into my chest. “Was it that shit with my baby mama?”

“No!” I felt low down and dirty, and I was about to kneel down right with him, but he pushed me back up.

“Don’t come down here, just answer.”

“You know I would love to marry you, right?”

“Why can’t you?”

“I ain’t what you may think I am. I would marry you if I could, even though I really did just meet you,” I admitted.

“Where is all this going?”

Placing my hands on both sides of his face, I crushed my lips to his. For a minute, our lips were just still. Then our tongues danced. A few minutes ago I had every intention of leaving him. Now, I can’t see life without him. Shid, what woman could see life without a man who would go this far out just to apologize and propose?

“Say yes.” He pulled away.

“I’m not perfect, O’mega.” My chin touched my chest. “I don’t always use my brain.”

“Me neither, you know that. Say yes, baby, so I can get up.”
